Columbus Zoo

The weather is turning and the leaves are in full color. It’s a great season to be in Dublin, Ohio! In addition to fantastic family events like Boo at the (Columbus) Zoo and COSI’s Festival of Physics, visitors will find an entire cauldron (otherwise known as a pot o’ gold in Dublin) full of local activities!

I love the cool mornings and warmer afternoons – and so do Ohio Apples. There are lots of great orchards within easy driving distance from Dublin. Pick your own at Cherry Hawk Farms  for delicious Gala, Jonafree and Delicious varieties. It’s a real working farm so wear your hiking boots and be sure to look at their pheasant cage while you are there!

Another family friendly place to visit in the fall is Jacquemin Farms. The strawberries are resting ‘til next year but the pumpkins are ready to pick! Each weekend the farm is busy with hay rides, kid-friendly play areas and my families favorite – fresh pumpkin donuts with apple cider. It’s one of those food treats you only have once a year. Don’t miss these!

Is it a rainy Wednesday morning? Go to the Abbey Theatre at the Dublin Recreation Center. For $2 (on select Wednesdays in October and November), you can enjoy live music performed by Marlene Metz Hartzler. This interactive fun experience is specially designed for 2 – 5 year olds, so be sure to bring your camera!

A Dublin Halloween tradition is to visit the Dublin Library (75 N. High St. Dublin, OH) to hear Dublin ghost stories. From 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, October 19, storytellers will amaze guests with real tales from the Dublin area. The first half of the program is family friendly followed by spookier stories creeping into the second half of the evening! (Look for our favorite local “Fruitcake Sisters” — the owners of Sisters Sweet Shoppe–to be performing as “Two Wicked Witches” in a spirited rendition of The 12 Days of Halloween!)

The city celebrates Halloween with the community Spooktacular event held at the Dublin Community Recreation Center from 3:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, October 27.  Enjoy a “Trunk” or treat trail with timed tickets for easy access, a hay maze, hay rides, pumpkin carving, COSI science spot, the Bug Man and lots of great family fun. Dublin Dance Center will be performing, and Dublin Police and Washington Township Firefighters will be on hand for the activities.

Don’t forget that the Dublin CVB’s awesome Fall Getaway packages offer discounted tickets to the Columbus Zoo and COSI Columbus, plus special hotel rates and a location just minutes away from all of these fun activities.

Embrace some fall fun and be sure to stop by the Dublin Visitor Center in Historic Dublin (9 S. High St. Dublin, OH)  if you need more suggestions!

Looking for some economical and crazy seasonal fun for the family? Check out this guest post from Jaclyn Reynolds, PR and Social Media Manager at COSI Columbus.

There’s just something about fall.  The crunching leaves, heading back to school, pumpkins everywhere, and specially-flavored coffee (yummy pumpkin spice lattes!) to brighten up your day.  This is my first fall at COSI and right away I’ve noticed it’s done a little differently.  COSI is all about inspiring curiosity, which is what drew me to it in the first place.  Why just pick a pumpkin when you can see fire breathe out of it?  Have you ever seen a flying turkey?  How about a crystal ball made entirely out of dry ice?  I did, during our Pumpkin Patch Live show!

For me, high school Physics was scary but there’s nothing to be afraid of at COSI’s Festival of Physics.  October 15 from 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and October 16, 2011 from 1 p.m.-4:30 p.m., we’ll explore whether or not you can be two places at once, what quantum physics and gumdrops have in common and what makes atoms explode!  Physicists from The Ohio State University will explore the deepest mysteries in the universe with the COSI Team.

My very favorite part of fall has always been Halloween!  Ever since my aunt let me borrow her real tiara so I could dress up as a real princess – I have been in love with Halloween.  Here at COSI, we have Spooky Science going on Oct. 28 (from 5 p.m.-9 p.m.) and Oct. 29 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.  We’ll have a (gently) spooky storyteller, a professional pumpkin carver, creepy crawlies, fun crafts and science cart activities transformed for a Halloween motif!  Plus – Spookley the Square Pumpkin is on the giant screen.  This cute fall-themed movie has a great anti-bullying message – perfect for October which is Anti-Bullying Month.

Teenagers have an extra special party at COSI with the Late Night Teen Event: Fangtastic Edition on October 29, 2011 from 8 p.m.-11 p.m.  It’s a fun party for teens in grades 9-12 with creepy crawly critters and a chance to explore COSI’s amazing “Adventure” exhibit.

So take a break from carving those pumpkins and getting those costumes ready and head into COSI for a lesson in the science of fall!  And pssst…..let me sweeten the deal by urging you to look for coupons on your placemat at Columbus area Frisch’s Big Boy restaurants.  PLUS, your Giant Eagle Advantage Card will get you $3.00 off an admission.  For more information on all of these fun events, visit cosi.org.  If you need me, I’ll be figuring out just what a barfing pumpkin is.

Coming from out-of-town to visit COSI?  Take advantage of Dublin Convention & Visitors Bureau’s  Fall Getaway Packages and enjoy discounted tickets to COSI (and the Columbus Zoo) plus great hotel rates and more. Go here to check out rates and availability or call 800/245-8387 for more info.

Fall in Columbus – it’s the perfect time of year! Experience Columbus Days is a city-wide partnership that runs Oct. 7-10, offering amazing deals and discounts to fun attractions, and 25% off your food bill at any Columbus Dine Originals restaurant!

If you’re a local, it’s a great time to explore the parts of Columbus you may have been missing –17 marquee attractions around the city like the Columbus Zoo, COSI, Franklin Park Conservatory and the Columbus Museum of Art offering half-price admission or buy-one-get-one tickets. If you’ve still never stopped a rhino at The Wilds or indulged in a tour with Columbus Food Adventures – they’re offering half-price tickets, too!

If you’re from out of town – what better time is there to visit? You can experience twice the number of attractions for your dollar, and get some great deals on Columbus’ independent and crave-worthy restaurants while you’re at it! It’s a great chance to turn a day-trip into an overnight stay to double the fun in another way!

This guest post was provided by Katie Ronske at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. We figured she could give you the “inside scoop” on Jack Hanna’s Fall Fest far better than we could!

It’s fall in Columbus which means it’s time for, you guessed it, Fall Fest at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium!  This summer has been a scorcher, and if you visited us here at the Zoo you may have left with a slight sunburn and sweat…well, everywhere. Now that the temps have finally dropped, dig out your comfy sweatshirts and jeans and head to the Zoo for some fall fun beginning this weekend at Jack Hanna’s Fall Fest.

This year’s Fall Fest celebration kicks off on Sep. 10 -11 and continues Sept. 17-18. Festivities include pumpkin carving, delicious fall food, country music, kid-friendly entertainment, character caravans, animals bobbing for apples and more! Nick Jr.’s Kai-lan will join the fun on Sept. 10-11 and our very own Jungle Jack Hanna will be live on stage with our Animals on Safari stars on Sep. 17-18.

Looking for more fall fun? Meet your Best Friend at the Zoo on Oct. 8 when area rescue organizations and humane societies provide guests with an opportunity to rescue some of their favorite furry friends. This is your opportunity to visit the Zoo AND go home with an animal…no lions, tigers or bears, of course.

After you take your new friend home, come back on Oct. 9 for Colo’s Classic Car show featuring your favorite classic, muscle and low-rider cars from all over Ohio. The cars will be parked at Jungle Jack’s Landing and Colo’s Cove and there will be plenty of  raffle prizes and awards!

Local retailers aren’t the only ones dusting off the black and orange Halloween décor. Boo at the Zoo is right around the corner and we’ve got Casper, Spider-Man and Captain America to help us celebrate. Witch? Lion? Ghost? There’s still time to decide, but mark your calendars for the weekends of Oct. 21-23 and Oct. 28-30 for this merry (not scary) event! We’ll see you at the Zoo!

For more information about these events, visit www.columbuszoo.org.

Oh my! Where did the summer go? If your house is like mine, we are making piles of school supplies, trying to adjust sleep schedules and having all the last minute fun we can enjoy before school starts!

My son enjoying one of his final school-free days!

Zoombezi Bay is open daily until August 23rd, then only open on weekends through Labor Day. Their new rides are a blast and the wave pool is the closest we can find to a beach in Central Ohio!

Big Boa Falls at Zoombezi bay

COSI has a great exhibit this summer called Dinosaurs: Explore, Escape, Survive that will be “extinct” after Labor Day. Be sure to go see and experience this 10,000 sq ft exhibit of fossils, interactive displays and a prehistoric maze before it’s gone – and their annual two week shutdown in September.

If you need a break from your house and want great discounts on these attractions, visit the Dublin Convention and Visitors Bureau web site to find information on the “Kids Eat Free” promotion. Discounted admission tickets, a fantastic Dublin hotel and free kids meals from a number of local restaurants are included in the package.

Have you played golf with the family this summer? The Golf Club of Dublin offers special discounts to Dublin residents and their patio has a beautiful sunset view over the course.

Have a fun-filled last two weeks of Summer Vacation!

When I was telling friends about our family’s plans to visit the Wilds yesterday, most people I spoke with said, “I’ve always wanted to go there.” Please don’t delay this trip – Go!

We had the best family outing yesterday at The Wilds. We booked the “Wilds Animal Encounter” tour, which runs a little shorter because we had both grandparents and kids along. It was the perfect choice for our family. The Wilds also offers other tours that are longer — Open Air Safari — and closed vehicle tours — Safari Transport — to suit your family needs.

Coming from Dublin, it took us about one hour and fifteen minutes coming out Route 70. Our GPS led us a different way than the Wilds directions, so we tried both- they were about the same. There is a small detour in Zanesville but it was easily followed. Driving up to the Wilds we saw the beautiful Ohio countryside. We loved seeing the hills and farmland and it really made us feel like we were escaping the city for the day.

When you enter the Wilds property, you park in a lower parking lot. From there, a shuttle takes you up to the Visitor Center where you can purchase your tours, or just go ahead and board your tour if you reserved your tickets online. There are concessions and restrooms available here, and throughout the tour with regularity.

The open-air safari vehicle reminded me of the one at Disney’s Animal Kingdom – but with way more legroom and better seats. There is an area in the rear for wheelchairs and we were free to move around the vehicle once it came to a stop when we were viewing animals. Be prepared as the guide shared that they have two seasons – dusty and muddy! Also be sure to bring your binoculars and camera. The kids loved being able to take their own pictures when the animals were close to the vehicle.

Animals? Yep. We saw so many I can’t remember all the names. Entering the solar powered gates to different enclosures kind-of felt like Jurassic Park but without the fear that a Dino might be closer than he appears!

Bison were roaming a range – and the Wilds has close to 10,000 acres to range – so we had to look carefully to see them through the pastures. Some animals are so close they are next to the vehicle, and some are grazing in the distance. I loved seeing the animals in their natural behaviors – and seeing more than one species in an enclosure. Each enclosure had a natural water source, shelter and grazing areas.

We saw Bison, Giraffes, Rhinos, Camels, Zebras, Oryx, Osprey and the list goes on and on. On the longer tours, you will see even more animals! Our guide was great at giving facts about the different species and explaining their conservation efforts. Questions were encouraged and it was great to witness this experience with our kids!

When our safari tour was finished, we stopped at the Administration building where we were treated to some close-up animal encounters. A lot of these animals are the same “ambassador” animals the Columbus Zoo uses – but some were different. Touching the animals and lots of questions were encouraged and I think the kids really learned a lot about some unusual species.

We exited the vehicle at the Overlook building – which is aptly named. What a view! We wished we could stay overnight – and just might next time at one of the Yurts you can rent (Adults only though!). The zipline tours looked like fun and the horseback rider waved his hat at us as he went by. There is a café at the Overlook building as well as a Gift shop.

Catch a frequent shuttle back down to your car and you are on your way with a lot of great family memories – and kids sleeping all the way home!

This week we’re pleased to feature a guest post by Jaclyn Reynolds, Public Relations and Social Media Manager at COSI Columbus.

School may be out for the summer but there is still plenty to learn at COSI!  Here at COSI, Q and A is in our DNA so we’ve compiledCOSI Getaway Package plenty of things for you to do this summer!  We’ve got so much for you to do; chances are you won’t realize you were learning until you head back to school!  Here are five things you may not know about COSI:

1.  Movies are always better in 3D!  Check out a dinosaur roaring right in your face or a giant wave that looks like it’s about to come crashing down on you in our new digital giant screen theater.  See Waking the T.Rex: The Story of SUE in heart-pounding 3D or  wonder why you aren’t soaked after seeing The Ultimate Wave: Tahiti in 3D.

2.  Next time you see fireworks, you’ll have a whole new outlook when you find out the “Science of Fireworks.”  Find out how fireworks blow up, how they launch into the air and how they get their pretty colors.  And with a grand finale of colorful explosions, you’re sure to have a great time!  Runs daily this summer at COSI.

3.  Sometimes science gets messy and who wants to clean that up?  We do!  Check out Messy Science Day on July 4.  It’s all things squishy, squirty and downright gooey!  Learn all about our favorite messy science experiments and demonstrations.

4.  Who else parks giant farm equipment out on the riverfront so you can learn all about the science behind them?  COSI of course!  Come see big farm equipment August 17 – 21, 2011.

5.   Dinosaurs!  All summer long you can see our colossal creatures “come to life” through animatronics, find your inner paleontologist with our 3,000 square foot maze testing your knowledge of the prehistoric and “be the dinosaur” in one of our exclusive interactive simulator pods!

And don’t forget to take advantage of the awesome Kids Eat FREE Summer Getaway Package that the Dublin Convention and Visitors Bureau has going on this summer!  Not only do you get discounted passes to the #1 Science Center in the country and the Columbus Zoo, but kids eat free AND you get to hang out in one of central Ohio’s real gems – Dublin!

Last year, it was the World’s Largest Redhead Gathering in North America (at the Dublin Irish Festival).  In 2007, it was the Guinness World Record for the Largest Irish Jig (10,036 people–also at the Dublin Irish Festival.)  What I’m saying here is … we’re big on big group fun in Dublin, Ohio.

Now, those examples refer to REALLY big groups. But–truth be told–we love to entertain groups of ANY size in Dublin. Year-round.  What does this mean to you? If you are looking for some fun group activities for your next meeting, reunion, Girl’s Night Out or corporate team-building event … we’ve got your back.

What started in 2007 as a way for the Dublin CVB to draw group tours to the city where Irish is an attitude, has bloomed into a palette of 22 Irish experiences and another dozen “Around the World in Dublin Ohio” experiences. Thanks to a handful of inventive and willing local partners, we’ve created immersive activities where groups can take an Irish Dance 101 class, savor Irish Sundaes while touring an ice cream factory, celebrate a Cinco De Mayo-inspired dinner or attend the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party!

The activities include a wide range of price points and levels, based on number of people and length of stay. Groups overnighting at one of Dublin’s 14 hotels can select from among our VIP experiences. Here are a few sample itineraries to whet your appetite:

Girl’s Day Out: Savor French pastries during Oo la la! Celebrating French Cuisine, before becoming Dublin Damsels on a Quest. Enjoy a Victorian era lunch experience then take in some shop therapy. Pour your own candle during Scents and Sensibility then finish off the day with a private Dinner & Spa Event.

Around the World in 24-hours (or less): Experience a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony, then head to the #1 Zoo in the country for a behind-the-scenes look at the Polar Frontier. Traverse to warmer climates during Perfecting a Southern Treat before a Salud Italiano lunch feast. Discover The Ancient Saints of Ireland or Irish Wake traditions during Wake Me When It’s Over. Enjoy Fro Yo: A South Korean Inspired Sweet Treat then finish the day with An All-American Hit: Hot Dogs, Baseball & Apple Pie.

Teach Me How: Lifelong student? Learn to dance an Irish jig, play the Penny Whistle, tell the difference between chocolates or teas from around the world AND decorate a cupcake!

I-rish I Was in Dublin (OH): Embark on a Four-Leaf Clover Scavenger Hunt through Historic Dublin while working up an appetite for a Sunny Irish Lunch. Meet a real leprechaun, an 1830s era Irish immigrant, bagpiper or an Irish storyteller. Learn to speak a little Gaelic, then savor an Irish Manor House Meal.

Among my many resolutions for this year: (1) Spend less. (2) Travel more.

At first glance, those two tasks might seem to cancel out each other. But, you see, I have this addiction. I’m a travel-a-holic. I love to go to new places … whether they are on the other side of the country or the other side of the city. So I’m (working on) becoming a super savvy traveler this year. I’m searching for the best values, insider tips and special offers.

Working in the travel industry, one thing I’ve learned when planning a trip is—start with your local Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB). CVBs are made up of locals who are passionate about their destination. We know the best places to eat, visit, stay and see. And we usually have knowledge of some great packages.  Like this one I’m going to share with you today:

The Embassy Suites Columbus Dublin is offering a Cabin Fever Family Fun Package (Feb. 19-20) with tons of fun and entertainment for everyone in the family—all for $124.99/night.  Activities include a family game and activity room (think board games, crafts and family friendly music), a movie room with kid-friendly flicks, bingo and wacky DJ games, a chocolate fountain, an Evening Manager’s reception, an indoor swimming and whirlpool, one large 2-topping pizza and a 2-liter bottle of soda per package, a goodie bag with local discount coupons and snacks, AND a full cooked-to-order breakfast buffet for all. (Call 614/790-9000 to book your package.)

Need more incentive? How about half-price admission to the #1 Zoo in the country? The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is offering half-price general admission during the entire months of January and February.  That’s plenty of opportunity to see Polar Bear Twins Anana and Aurora frolicking in their cool Polar Frontier habitat the way three-year-old Polar bears sisters do.  It’s hard to beat that kind of economical family travel fun, right?  For more info, visit the Dublin CVB website or call 800/245-8387.
