This guest post comes from Mark Holbrook, Marketing Manager with the Ohio Historical Society.

The wait is over! Summer in Central Ohio will be even more exciting this year as Ohio Village will be open, once again, to visitors on the same days as the museum in the Ohio History Center ( June 2 -September 2). It’s been nine years since the village matched hours with the museum and explorers of Ohio history could enjoy two attractions for the price of one admission– to the museum AND the Ohio Village. The village will be populated with costumed interpreters helping visitors to understand how people lived 150 years ago. Other activities like cell phone tours and Village Quest, a treasure hunt-style booklet promise to keep adventurers back in time while visiting the Civil War era town.

Characters in the village will include Ezechiel Abraham Barrymore, the town’s undertaker and carpenter. Ezechiel can build a coffin for you or, if that’s in the far future, how about some furniture for your home? Then there’s Hiram Brown, the pharmacist. He is sure to have a concoction for whatever ails you. And don’t forget to stop by the lodging house and sit a spell with Mrs. Baugh. She has the latest gossip on all the residents, some of it true! Need a few dry goods? Stop in at the General Store where Mr. Watson can supply everything from fabric to nails. And you can pick up your mail there, too.

In addition to the daily experiences of the Village, several Discount Days will take place on select Saturdays when half price admission specials will be offered. June 2 will be Senior Day for visitors 65 years and older. Scouting Day is June 16 for scouts, leaders and their chaperones. July 21 is Military Day for active duty and retired services members and their families. August 11 is Educator Day. While teachers receive free admission to the Ohio History Center, other education professionals and their families will receive half-off on Educator Day. Base Ball Day is September 1 for anyone, youth or adult wearing uniform, cap or shirts supporting their favorite team. Echoes in Time Theatre will take up residence in the Village every Saturday this summer at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. And, on July 21, Civil War soldiers return to the Village for an all day encampment where visitors can learn about camp life. Plus, the Ohio Village Muffins vintage base ball team will play on several weekends. Details can be found at www.ohiohistory.org/village.

*******

Ohio Village is located just off of I-71 on 17th Avenue (exit 111) about four miles north of downtown Columbus in Franklin County. Summer hours: Wed-Sat. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, 12 p.m.-5 p.m. Visit www.ohiohistory.org to learn more.

This guest post was written by Jaclyn Reynolds, Public Relations and Social Media Manager at COSI Columbus. COSI (the Center of Science and Industry) is located just 15 minutes south of Dublin Ohio — and was recently named to Forbes list of the nation’s Top 12 Best Children’s Museums.

COSI Columbus recently announced its exhibit lineup for the next year. We hardly ever do that but we had such a great lineup of exhibits that seemed to tie in to each other, we decided to give it a shot. We named it the Brain Trip – a really fun name (and self-explanatory). However, the other night at dinner with friends, I was explaining why I had been so busy lately. I was talking animatedly about the Brain Trip when one of them interrupted me and said, “um, Jaclyn? What exactly is a Brain Trip?”

Good question! Helping you keep your brain sharp is definitely something we do at COSI every day. From live shows to hands-on interactive science experiments, COSI is definitely a place to exercise your brain. So with four exhibits headed our way this upcoming year, giving it a catchy name just seemed to be a “no-brainer.” (Haha!)

First up, we’ll use those critical thinking skills to build masterpieces with LEGO® Castle Adventure (September 29, 2012 to January 6, 2013). Then we’ll do a literal study of the brain with Gunther von Hagens’ Body Worlds & The Brain (October 17, 2012 – January 6, 2013). Then it’s time to boost your brain power solving brainteasers and interactive challenges with MindBender Mansion (January 26 to April 28, 2013). And finally, we’ll wrap it up with sharpening those problem-solving skills with Mythbusters: The Explosive Exhibition (June 8 – September 13, 2013).

So back to the question of a Brain Trip: we think this is a great year to take a trip to COSI, maximize that brain power, learn more about what’s going on in your mind and have a really great time along the way!

As communities across the nation celebrate the contributions of travel and tourism to our country this week during National Tourism Week, we would like to take the opportunity to recognize the economic, social, and cultural value of tourism in our own backyard. The fact is…tourism is vital to Dublin, Ohio. Every year, visitors generate tens of millions of dollars to Dublin’s economy. They come to Dublin for business, athletic tournaments, special events, conferences, reunions, weddings and vacations. These visitors spend money in our hotels, restaurants, shops, gas stations and at our attractions.

So how do visitors to Dublin directly impact local residents? Visitors pay a local bed tax on the cost of their lodging that goes directly to support a variety of organizations and activities in Dublin – the Dublin Irish Festival, Independence Day and St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations, Spooktacular, lights and other facilities at Avery Park and Darree Fields, Dublin Soccer League soccer goals, various events in Historic Dublin and the Dublin Arts Council and its programs.

But, local bed tax revenue is only a small portion of the overall visitor benefit. For example, Dublin will host the annual Memorial Golf Tournament in a few weeks, which will bring an economic impact of $36.5 million to our economy – and that is just one event over a one-week period. Nationally, travel and tourism is a $1.9 trillion industry and is one of the country’s largest employers with 14.4 million direct travel-generated jobs. Travel and tourism also generates $124 billion in tax revenue for local, state and federal government. In fact, each U.S. household would pay $1,055 more in taxes without the tax revenue generated by the travel and tourism industry. Although tourism impacts the success of our overall economy, it also ensures our quality of life because it influences every business and affects almost every aspect of our daily lives. This industry is diverse and wide-ranging, from obvious segments, such as airlines, airports, rental cars, hotels, and travel agents, to the countless businesses found within our community, such as restaurants, museums, zoos and amusement parks. From entry-level employees to top-level executives, tourism-related jobs in the United States can be found in countless fields that benefit all communities.

National Tourism Week is the perfect opportunity to acknowledge the value of tourism in Dublin. Please join us in celebrating tourism’s contributions to our community.

What is there for a 24 year old to do in Dublin, Ohio?….Plenty!

When I received the news that I had been hired as the new SMERF Sales and Marketing Manager for the Dublin Ohio Convention & Visitors Bureau, I was ecstatic. From my interviews and research, I learned the position entailed “selling and marketing” the city of Dublin. After living in the Columbus area for 15 years, I knew that Dublin is an amazing and unique city. I moved to Delaware when I was 10 years old and lived there until I ventured a whopping 35 miles away to Bexley, Ohio to attend Capital University. After graduating with a degree in Marketing, I moved to the northwest side of Columbus. Since I have been a resident of Central Ohio for so long, I thought I would be ahead of the game when it came to learning about Dublin but boy, was I wrong!

Dublin has more to offer visitors than I ever had imagined! There are so many events beyond the Dublin Irish Festival and the Memorial Tournament. Not only is the city extremely family friendly and beautiful, but it really appeals to my demographic, as well. When I make plans with friends, we automatically think to travel to the Short North or the Arena District. But now I am thinking we have been missing the opportunity to experience Dublin!

I have been making daily mental notes on different places to bring my friends – starting with the Dublin Village Tavern. What a great atmosphere to have a drink and appetizer! Each day I look out my window and see their patio filled with people for lunch and after work Happy Hour. I have now tried a few different menu items, but I’m planning to try something new next time – their Irish Egg Rolls. Venturing down the road, you will come to the Brazenhead Irish Pub. I’d visited there before for the great patio and specials, but I never knew they had live music, too. That’s a perfect way to spend a night during the summer! Or, if you like to try different beers, original cocktails and amazing food, Matt the Miller’s Tavern is the place to go. I am a huge fan of their flatbreads – I need to go back to try a different item on the menu!

I also realized there are great little shops in Historic Dublin! Each year, I travel to the mall to find something green to wear for St. Patty’s day (mostly so I don’t get pinched by friends!). On Wednesday, I visited Ha’Penny Bridge Imports of Ireland for the first time. They had the cutest shirts as well as other Irish gear! I am embarrassed to say I never thought of looking in Historic Dublin for Irish themed clothing. That same day we also stopped in to Clover Boutique. I was tempted to try on every piece of clothing on the racks! They had so many unique tops and dresses that you cannot find anywhere else.

Being a chocolate and sweets lover, I am becoming quite spoiled by working within a short walk of Sister’s Sweet Shoppe, Aboxa Fudge, Jeni’s Ice Cream and Our Cupcakery. After tasting chocolate covered fudge (who knew there was such a heavenly creation!?) at Aboxa Fudge on Thursday, I had to be sure to run an extra mile or two that night!

My “Irish Attitude” has already been developed! I can’t wait to continue to learn more about this great city and pass that knowledge on to others!

~Samantha Kennedy is the SMERF Sales & Marketing Manager for the Dublin (OH) Convention & Visitors Bureau. (SMERF is an acronym for Social, Military, Educational, Reunion and Fraternal markets.)

I’m excited about the opportunity to market and sell our great Dublin Ohio tourism product next week to a worldwide audience at the U.S. Travel Association’s International Pow Wow. The event is the travel industry’s premier international marketplace and the largest generator of travel to the U.S. It is NOT a typical trade show. In just three days of intensive pre-scheduled business appointments, more than 1,000 U.S. travel organizations from every region of the USA (representing all industry category components), and close to 1,200 International and Domestic Buyers from more than 70 countries, conduct business negotiations that result in the generation of more than $3.5 billion in future Visit USA travel. At International Pow Wow, buyers and sellers are able to conduct business that would otherwise be generated only through an exhaustive number of around-the-world trips.

Another exciting factor is that the Dublin Convention & Visitors Bureau will be attending the show with the Ohio Tourism Division and Experience Columbus. This is just another example of the unique collaboration and regional partnerships we have with the State of Ohio and Columbus. All of our respective organizations win when we can position our region as a great destination.

The grass is green, the trees are blooming, it’s Spring here in Dublin, Ohio. This time of year is great to be outside and enjoy our wonderful parks. Did you know Dublin offers 56 developed parks with over 980 acres of parkland? Take a picnic lunch (Whole Foods makes a great sandwich and their salad bar offers many choices) and enjoy it beside the Scioto River. The Dublin Arts Council now offers a cell phone tour so you can hear the artist describing Chief Leatherlips – or any other of their Art In Public Places sculptures around Dublin.

While you’re in Historic Dublin, stop by the newly remodeled Visitor Center to grab a Historic Dublin Walking Tour. Enjoy walking the district and sharing the history – and don’t forget to stop by some of the merchants for some local interaction! Many of the restaurants offer lunch, or if you are in the mood for a treat, try Jeni’s Ice Cream, Our CupCakery or Sisters Sweet Shoppe!

Another great Spring tradition–Baseball–starts this time of year. Did you know we have a factory tour of MLB approved bats here in Dublin? Visit Phoenix Bats where you can speak with the technicians who are making wood bats for many major league players. During your tour, you’ll see a wooden bat carved in front of you in just two minutes. Visit www.phoenixbats.com for a list of tour times and details.

On those rainy days, visit COSI Columbus to see the new WATER exhibit – where you can explore where water occurs on Earth, how it’s used and how we can become better stewards of our water planet. Experience hands-on and digital interactive elements, videos, wall panels, models, specimens and live animals.

It may be Spring Break, but the Ohio History Center inspires kids to learn more about Ohio’s great history. Explore Ohio’s natural history through its plants, animals, geology, geography and climate. Walk under a giant mastodon for a tour of Ohio from the ice age to the present. Kids will love the specimens available for touching, computer displays and special kids play areas.

Columbus Zoo and Aquarium offers year-round fun for kids of all ages. Meet polar bear twins Anana and Aurora, get nose-to-nose with manatees at Manatee Coast, venture through a nocturnal animal facility, ride a 1914 Mangels Illions carousel, and meet “Hank” (all 15,600 lbs of him)–the elephant that is winning hearts every day.

Have a fun and happy Spring Break spending time together as a family!

This guest post comes from Jaclyn Reynolds, Public Relations and Social Media Manager at COSI Columbus.

One of my favorite things about working at COSI Columbus is getting to see the new exhibitions and learning something new every day! This past weekend, we opened our WATER exhibition. It always surprises me how these exhibits arrive in lots of crates and boxes and two weeks later become gorgeous exhibitions.

The exhibit celebrates, explores and teaches all about water. Through hands-on activities, videos and fun things to walk through (like a water vapor curtain and a canyon), you learn about the different properties of water and how parts of our planet get along with too much water or too little water. Did you know that the earth is 70% water? That’s why they call it the “blue planet!”

The exhibit seems fitting with tomorrow’s celebration of World Water Day! That is a day set aside by the United Nations to promote clean water and sustainable aquatic habits. In celebration of that, our friends at Whole Foods Market in Dublin are donating 5% of all sales to COSI on Thursday, March 22, between 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Plus, Whole Foods Market will have a scavenger hunt to explain how much water is in food and completing it could mean a discount for COSI admission so you can come see us and the WATER exhibition.

We’re thankful for all of the support from the community for our WATER exhibition and to our friends at Whole Foods for their generosity. We hope to see you at COSI soon!

~Post by Jaclyn Reynolds, Public Relations and Social Media Manager at COSI Columbus. To learn more about COSI or the limited engagement of WATER (March 17-September 3, 2012) visit www.cosi.org

Note: The Dublin Convention & Visitors Bureau offers 14 hotels just minutes from COSI and downtown Columbus (many which offer discounted tickets to COSI and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium).
