“Green Weekend” in Dublin: Holiday Heaven

Forget about Black Friday; I’m calling this Saturday and Sunday “Green Weekend,” because of Dublin’s many seasonal events and selection of unique holiday gifts.

post3The annual Chili Cook-off is today in Historic Dublin from noon to 4 p.m. For $5, you can sample nine Dublin residents’ recipes at La Chatelaine, J. Liu, and the Dublin Village Tavern. Vote for your favorite, and the top three will compete in the finals, 4:15 at La Chatelaine.

From 10 to 3, all three Dublin high schools are coming together at Sisters Sweet Shoppe (also in Historic Dublin) to auction off homemade gingerbread houses. The proceeds benefit the Ohio State School for the Blind’s Marching Band, which is performing in the Rose Bowl parade on New Year’s Day. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate the season in Dublin.

As for holiday shopping, check out these locally owned stores!

The Shoppes at River Ridge:

    My favorite things: Miche bags, which have interchangeable covers for any occasion; OSU rhinestone beads; the selection of sparkly rings. (I just can’t resist sparkle!)

Historic Dublin:

    Irish gifts of all kind: clothes, pottery, jewelry, decor, even kilts!
    My favorite things: Celtic crosses, Irish nativity scenes, Belleek pottery. (This is one of the only places outside Ireland you can find it!)

    Children’s apparel and unique gifts, personally chosen by mother-daughter owners.
    My favorite things: Adorable sweaters (some of these make me wish I was still a little girl), uniquely adorned stockings and ornaments.

    Fine gifts and home appointments, from china pieces to handcrafted wreaths. New to Historic Dublin!
    My favorite things: Pretty picture frames, holiday serving dishes, handcrafted wreaths and other floral arrangements (made by Chris, one of the owners).

    Sweets for all ages: gourmet truffles, candied nuts, peanut brittle, and the sisters’ signature homemade fruitcakes.
    My favorite things: New chocolate-dipped fruitcakes and their stocking stuffers, which are the perfect gift for anyone who loves chocolate. (But let’s be honest, practically everything in there could be considered my favorite.)

Just checked out the Shoppes at River Ridge the other day and found some GREAT

bargains. Not many people (outside of local Dubliners) know about this new gem of a shopping district … but they will. Montgomery Inn (the top-rated privately held rib and barbecue restaurant in the US in 2007) will open its first Central Ohio restaurant in the Spring of 2009, right here in Dublin, Ohio.  But, there’s more.

 

Did you know that you can find fun holiday gifts for $15 and under at Audacious? I found purses, bracelets & bangles, hoop earrings, scarves, sunglasses, wallets, key chains and even OSU items. You can even build your own charm bracelet.  Every Wednesday 5-8 p.m. is Girls Night Out … with great specials.  

I found a Vera Bradley tote for my daughter-in-law at Bliss. This new store is filled with designer brands, all created by women, including: Crabtree & Evelyn, Stephan Baby, Bambini Carini, Mistral, Bean Pod, Trollbeads, Chamilia, Lela Belle, She Beads, Staxx and Kameleon.

The Acorn has markdowns of at least 50%. And then there’s Coldwater Creek with all those fabulous, irresistible clothes. If you’re looking for a unique gift for your favorite munchkin, try The Learning Center for very cool stuff. Take a coffee/bagel break at Bruegger’s Bagels. Coming soon: The Wine Loft (Feb. 2009) and Simpure Aveda Salon (March 2009). The Shoppes at River Ridge is located near the southeast corner of 161/Dublin-Granville Rd. close to Riverside Drive.

Sneak Peak

Our 2009 Official Dublin, Ohio Visitors Guide is (finally) under production. (Woo hoo!) We should have Slainte Thursdaysthe proof back soon to double check everything before it goes to the printer.  The guide has the distinct honor of being our most requested publication–with 45,000 copies being distributed each year.  

Since you’re among our favorite peeps, we wanted to give you a sneak peak at a little of the content … some fun “Insider Tips” known mostly only to locals.
