Four years ago: Dublin Green (now named something else) was the long-time arch nemesis of my summer swim team, the Annehurst Piranhas.

Three months ago: I venture out of Westerville, where I was raised and never had to leave because honestly, I thought it had everything, to begin an internship with the Dublin CVB.

Today: I am wrapping up my time here to return to OU for one more year of youthful escapades before entering the real world and putting my skills to good use.

YIKES! Time sure flies. Three years ago I would be what some might call an elitist. My pride for my neighborhood bound me to a “hatred” (you all know the high school rivalry feeling) of Dublin. My town was so awesome that I never had to, nor had the desire to, go to other Columbus suburbs or learn anything about them. So this spring when I got hired to be the summer intern at the Dublin Convention and Visitors Bureau, naturally I was a little nervous.

How am I supposed to attract people to this place I know nothing about? Ok the Memorial Tournament is huge, but that will be over by the time I get there! Oh no… what else? Oh yea! The Dublin Irish Festival! But that is only 3 days out- how do I stretch that the whole summer??

As my starting date loomed closer I began to become more nervous. Alas, the day arrived and I soon realized I had nothing to worry about. Dublin is awesome!

My co-worker Allison and I enjoying some Jeni's in Historic Dublin.

Besides the two obviously huge events that I have already mentioned, Dublin has a plethora of other great attractions. For example, Historic Dublin is absolutely adorable. It is filled with tons of shops, from cute boutiques to yummy candy stores, as well as food choices from all around the world!  (Seriously there is French, Irish, American, Asian, English and more!) Also, the third Thursday of every month is Sláinte Thursday, during which the shops stay open late and there is live music at many of the restaurants. Additionally, the Dublin CVB has partnerships with the Columbus Zoo, Zoombezi Bay, and COSI Columbus; places I recall greatly enjoying as a kid and still wish I had more time to visit as an adult.

Those are only sampling of the great things Dublin to offer! So turns out I had nothing to worry about, and now as a pro at all things Dublin, I encourage everyone to visit. With your choice of 14 great hotels and many package deals throughout the year, how can you say no? And don’t forget, you don’t need Irish in your blood, just in your soul!

Oh my! Where did the summer go? If your house is like mine, we are making piles of school supplies, trying to adjust sleep schedules and having all the last minute fun we can enjoy before school starts!

My son enjoying one of his final school-free days!

Zoombezi Bay is open daily until August 23rd, then only open on weekends through Labor Day. Their new rides are a blast and the wave pool is the closest we can find to a beach in Central Ohio!

Big Boa Falls at Zoombezi bay

COSI has a great exhibit this summer called Dinosaurs: Explore, Escape, Survive that will be “extinct” after Labor Day. Be sure to go see and experience this 10,000 sq ft exhibit of fossils, interactive displays and a prehistoric maze before it’s gone – and their annual two week shutdown in September.

If you need a break from your house and want great discounts on these attractions, visit the Dublin Convention and Visitors Bureau web site to find information on the “Kids Eat Free” promotion. Discounted admission tickets, a fantastic Dublin hotel and free kids meals from a number of local restaurants are included in the package.

Have you played golf with the family this summer? The Golf Club of Dublin offers special discounts to Dublin residents and their patio has a beautiful sunset view over the course.

Have a fun-filled last two weeks of Summer Vacation!

  • Buy your tickets early. Visit www.DublinIrishFestival.org prior to August 4 to receive a great discount on your tickets. Pay online, print at home and just bring the paper to the Festival!
  • Kids 12 and under are free! The Wendy’s Wee Folk Area is filled with free crafts and entertainment while the Pot O’Gold Playland area requires a $10 wristband to enter. Inflatables, a climbing wall and mini-Gaelic games will be fun!  Be sure to bring some spending money for treats and souvenirs.
  • Park in Metro Place and enjoy the shuttle! Take 270 to exit 17A and turn right onto Frantz Road and right into Metro Place. You’ll see the signs for the shuttles and they run on a continuous loop so you’ll be having fun in no time! The Dublin Irish Festival also offers a Bike Valet service in two locations — so enjoy some of Dublin’s great bike paths and come on two wheels!
  • Beverage tokens are sold in different lines that the actual beverages. Soda, wine and beer all require tokens — with the exception of the Whiskey Tasting Sessions. You are allowed to bring two sealed non-alcoholic beverages (up to a total of 1 liter) per person in a soft-sided cooler into the Festival.

    Sand Sculpture being formed.

  • Seek out the quieter spaces at the Festival. Enjoy petting a Celtic Canine, listen to a traditional Irish story, strum a harp or watch the Sand Sculpture evolve before your eyes!
  • Be sure to watch some Irish Dancers! Consult the map at the Festival for times and stages and watch the feet fly to the rousing music. (Yes, those ARE wigs the girls are wearing!)
  • Save enough time to listen to some impressive music – at each stage! Usually in the shade, these music tents are fantastic places to sit awhile, enjoy some Festival food and hear a variety of music. With multiple performances throughout the Festival, there is music for everyone!

Dublin has a whole lot of fun planned for the Fourth of July.

Join your neighbors at Sunday’s at Scioto on Sunday, July 3rd for an evening of free music courtesy of the Dublin Arts Council. Starting at 7 p.m. in Scioto Park, the entertainment will be “Swing’s the Thing” a 16 piece big-band group that features classic sounds as well as current hits. Be sure to bring your lawn chairs and blankets for a great night outdoors.

The fun doesn’t stop on Monday, July 4th! The day begins with the Sherm Sheldon Fishing Derby at 8 a.m. in front of the Dublin Recreation Center in the pond. Cast away and win prizes for the largest fish and enjoy spending time with your family! Parking is free and easy in the lot adjacent.

The Independence Day Parade steps off at 11 a.m. from Metro Center Business Park (Corner of Frantz Road and 161) and continues down 161, turning right onto South High Street into the Historic District. Parking is plentiful – but arrive early for the easiest spots. Try parking in the Kroger Dublin Plaza, beside Sells Middle School, behind the Dublin Library/Indian Run Elementary or across the river at Scioto Plaza. High School Marching bands, neighborhood floats, children’s bike brigade, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and great American fun celebrating our Nation’s Independence. The parade usually takes an hour and a half, but most of the businesses in the Historic District stay open later so you can stroll around and shop!

After the parade our family goes home for a rest so we can stay up late that night to see the fireworks!

Come over to the Dublin Coffman High School for the rest of the festivities (corner of Coffman Road and Emerald Parkway). Gates open at 4:30 and it is free admission to the stadium.  The SkyHoundz Hyperflite Canine Frisbee Competition will take place at 5 p.m. Local bands will play from 5-8 and Smokey Robinson will headline the evening starting at 8:15. He’ll play until 9:45 then the fireworks will go off at 9:50. Handicapped parking is available in the High School lot, general parking can be found in Coffman Park, the Dublin Recreation Center, Verizon Wireless and Cardinal Health. Classic American fare can be purchased at the concession stands.

Have a safe and fun 4th of July!

It’s been three years in the planning. Now, it’s finally here. In just a few days, 750 police, fire and law enforcement officials from around the world will come to Dublin Ohio to compete in the 2010 Can-Am Police-Fire Games (Aug. 15-21).  They will be coming from as far away as New Zealand and Bulgaria and as close as Columbus, Gahanna and Dublin–representing 38 states and provinces and nine countries. They will face-off against fellow public safety service personnel in 45 Olympic-style events including Police K9, SWAT and Toughest Firefighter Alive.  They will generate approximately $3.5 million to the local economy.

The free, family friendly Opening Ceremonies (4:30-9 pm Sunday, August 15) will offer the public the opportunity to come out to honor and support these dedicated men and women. The event will be held on the South Lawn of Coffman Park (5200 Emerald Pkwy) in Dublin OH.  Activities will include touch-a-truck, police cars, motorcycles & EMS vehicles, SWAT displays, antique fire engines, a free concert by Phil Dirt and the Dozers, inflatables for the kids, Medflight & Ohio State Patrol helicopters, a police K9 Demo, a Police vs. Fire tug-o-war, Cyrill-Scott Pipes & Drums, Washington Twp. Color Guard, a welcome from Dublin Mayor Tim Lecklider, singing of the National Anthem, an appearance by the Grand Leprechaun AND food and drink.  Community groups of 6-8 people can (for a donation) face-off in the tug-of-war agains the Police or Fire teams.

The best thing that the Can-Am Games will bring to Dublin? Lots of camaraderie–amongst competitors, fans and the community. Don’t miss this exciting event.  Visit www.DublinCanAmGames.com or call 800/245-8387 for details.

I always struggle with what to get my nephews and niece for Christmas. Like most kids I know—they definitely do NOT need any more toys, games, etc. Columbus Zoo Wildlights(Of course, they’ll never admit that.) They have many adult relatives (with more money than I have) that cover their wish lists.  Still, I strive to be THE coolest aunt. (The women in my family are extremely competitive in this way.)

So, I decided last year to give them experiences. Basically, it goes like this: I ask each of them to come up with a list of (a) cool places in Ohio that they’d like to visit (b) fun things they like to do (i.e. ice skating, amusement parks, etc.) and (c) where they like to eat. Then we go through the list together, come up with a compromise and go! Some things get eliminated from the list if they are too expensive (my option). Some things get eliminated if they aren’t a good fit for everyone—(i.e. my nephews would never go for a day of mani/pedis and shopping … much to the chagrin of my niece and I).

This year, I think I’ve found a crowd pleaser that will make everyone happy. Actually, I found it without leaving my desk at work. It’s close-to-home. It’s inexpensive, all packaged up and ready to go. (And it helped that—as part of my job—I helped to create this fun getaway for visitors.) The official name for the package is Kids Go Free-Columbus Zoo Wildlights Getaway. The official details of the package are: (a) It can be booked online Nov. 20-Dec. 31 (b) It includes an overnight stay at a choice of Dublin (OH) hotels (c) It includes free kids passes to Wildlights at The Columbus Zoo (d) It includes a free kids meal at Bob Evans and a free junior scoop for kids from Graeter’s Ice Cream.

The unofficial reasons why I would book one of these packages? (a) The cost of the packages with hotel and Zoo tickets starts at $79 for a family of four. (Yes, you read that right.) That’s less than I would’ve spent on their combined Christmas gifts. (b) Staying at a hotel is WAY more fun than just driving to the Zoo, going out for dinner and ice cream and driving home (i.e. SLUMBER PARTY!, swimming etc.) (c) Contrary to popular belief, Dublin CVB staffers don’t get stuff for free.  But my biggest motivation is completely selfish. After I last planned one of these experiences, my 6-year-old niece gave me a hand-written thank you note that said, “Ant Mimi … you are the bast Aunt EVAR!!!!!!!!”  This year, I’m gonna top that.

Fall brings so many great things here in Dublin, Ohio … cool breezes, the brilliant palette of changing leaves, football fever, a bountiful harvest from owl-Ohio-Wildlife-Centerlocal farmers and, of course, school (again). Even though fall is my favorite season, the idea of “back-to-school” makes me a little sad. (Probably not-so-much for you parents of 3+ children, huh?) I guess it’s the idea of summer—and all the fun trips, vacations, activities, fun family free time coming to an end, in order to accommodate all those things that occupy our busy schedules during the year.

If your family is anything like mine, that means everyone is going in different directions most days. But I’ve come up with a mini-solution to this drifting-effect. About this time every year, I plan a couple of family getaway weekends for the fall/winter months and plug the dates into our “master” calendar. Everyone at my house knows these are non-negotiable dates. Attendance is required. These are usually “close to home” getaways involving  Ohio travel. We try to target some new city, attraction or park we’ve never visited—then look for deals.  My starting point is always the web site of the Ohio Division of Travel & Tourism: Discoverohio.com  Sometimes I search a word like “fall” or “history” for ideas. Sometimes I go right to the Travel Tools/Local Tourism Organizations (often the CVB web sites offer great hotel packages with discounted attraction tickets).

If I know I want to visit a certain city or area—I’ll call the CVB and ask them for suggestions. I KNOW these people are as passionate about travel as I am, so it’s a great way to learn about hidden gems. And I try to offer the same service for visitors calling the Dublin CVB for Dublin or Central Ohio getaway information.

Trust me. Schedule your fall/winter getaway in now–or time will slip away.  (It will be worth it just to hear them say, “This was SO COOL, Mom!”)   So, tell us … when & where was the last non-summer family getaway you planned?
